Advance to Rostov Campaign Game

Tom Schumacher adapted an Advanced Squad Leader system for developing campaigns which can be found here. He used it to develop a campaign game set in the critical period after Stalingrad was surrounded in December 1942. The Russians attacked toward Rostov and threatened to cut off not only the troops in Stalingrad, but all those who had moved to the areas South and East and were not in the pocket. He and his group played this campaign game over several sessions, generating a series of linked scenarios.

December 23

The first scenario - the initial Russian attack.

Tatsinskaya
Tatsinskaya 		The town of Tatsinskaya on Dec 23rd, the first game. This was the one of the primary objectives.
Russians Attack
Russians Attack 		Turn 2, the Russians move to sweep around to the north side of the town, while German air support tries to delay the Russian advance.

Russians Attack 2 		Turn 2, another view of the Russian advance. In the background, 2 T70 tanks have discovered the German minefields.
Fight for the town
Fight for the town 		Turn 4, The Russian have a foothold in the town, while Russian T34 tanks move in.

Close Quarters 		Turn 9, The Russians find the fighting in the close quarters of the town can be deadly to tanks!

December 24

The second scenario - the fight for the airfield.

December 26

After a day where both sides regroup, comes the third scenario, a German counterattack. At the end of the day, both sides agreed that the Russians had suffered sufficient losses that they could not hold through the 27DEC scenario, and the campaign was adjudicated to be a German victory.
